The Cannabis Act or Bill C-45 was first introduced in 2017, a revolutionary idea considering that cannabis had been illegal in Canada for nearly 100 years. As of October 2018 cannabis has finally been legalized across the country! Each province and territory has the ability to decide what regulations they want to impose on cannabis legalization, so the age of majority and the types of retail outlets may differ across the country.

Alberta Legalization 2018 Rules

In Alberta, adults of legal drinking age (18 or older) can legally purchase cannabis at regulated retail stores or online through AlbertaCannabis.org. They are also able to:

  • Possess up to 30 grams of dried cannabis or equivalent

  • Share up to 30 grams of cannabis with other legal adults

  • Grow up to four cannabis plants per household for personal use

  • Make your own cannabis products such as edibles

LEGAL EDIBLES IN CANADA

As of October 2019, legal cannabis retailers now have a selection of edibles for their customers to choose from. These new products include edible and drinkable cannabis, cannabis extracts, and cannabis topicals.

City of Calgary Cannabis Bylaws

The City of Calgary has created specific rules around public consumption, these laws are outlined in the Municipal Bylaws. These bylaws include the following:

  • Only medical cannabis users are permitted to consume cannabis in public spaces

  • Medical users must still obey other smoking and vaping bylaws regarding safe consumption areas

  • On private property, the city views cannabis smoke in the same way as tobacco smoke. It may not be some people’s favourite smell, but it is still legal. Oakridge Cannabis recommends checking out our selection of dry herb vaporizers to ensure your neighbours won’t know a thing!

If you are travelling outside of Canada, Oakridge Cannabis recommends that you leave your cannabis at home and that you research the local laws about mary jane at your destination. Traveling with cannabis into different jurisdictions, even legal cannabis, can have serious consequences including up to 14 years in jail.
